A lot of people have been asking me a certain question lately: So, when are you going to be done with school?
The short answer is July 31st, the date I officially roll to the next school year. But the more informative answer takes a bit longer.
Here are my plans for the months of May, June and July.
We'll start with Reagan (grade 3). We will continue with Reagan's math. We are on lesson 110 of 150 in RightStart Math D. We went more slowly in the middle of the book, because the concepts were a bit more difficult. Now we have picked up the pace again, I figure we have about 8 weeks left.
Spelling (Spell to Write and Read)will also continue for about 6 more weeks, we technically could be done (I think we've done our 180 days of instruction) but I'd like to finish one more section of spelling lists. So 6 more weeks.
Cursive (Handwriting without Tears) will continue, we have a bit more of that workbook to get through, next year I'd like to have him writing in cursive regularly.
Latin (Prima Latina)we finished first semester.
Grammar we have finished, or at least as much as we are going to. I need to find a more engaging approach next year. We uses First Language Lessons for the Well-Trained Mind Grade 3, and I liked it, but Reagan found it boring. He always got the assignments correct but when Daddy asked him what he was learning in Grammar, he admitted, "I don't pay attention in Grammar." I don't think school needs to be "fun" but I think a bit more engagement would be nice.
For History we just started The Story of the World Volume III after completing Volume II! We'll keep on with that over the summer, we love the books from the reading list that we get from the library, and occasionally doing some of the project suggestions.
For Science we finished our Earth Science and Astronomy studies using R.E.A.L. Science Volume 2 and Apologia Exploring Creation with Astronomy. We only got about half through the Apologia book, but I think the kids learn more from just reading library books about space, so we are doing that. We will also do our customary nature studies now that the weather is nice! I may look into some of the Botany suggestions from A Gypsy Caravan, particularly the book Shanleya's Quest. I'd also like to start a family nature journal, which I think might be easier to manage and more fun than the individual nature journals we have been trying to keep up with.
For Religion we have about 4 more lessons in the Image of God text. I am also going to start introducing activities to go along with my study of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. I'm looking forward to the family style learning!
Avery (Kindergarten) will of course tag along with what Reagan is doing.
We just finished his math book (RightStart A) and his reading program (Sonlight LA K). We will continue with reading practice over the summer. I've been having him learn sight word flash cards, as he knows his letter sounds and is pretty good at spelling words by sounding them out.
Mary (preschool) will keep on doing much of the same blend of Montessori activities, reading books from the Little Saints preschool program, and a few crafts, games, and circle times. I think we'll do the Plants unit from Little Saints since I am hoping to do some Botany with the boys and we've been spending time in the garden of late.
And of course dear Jameson (20 months) will be getting into everything, he just loves digging in the sandbox. He is also starting to sit for books, We're Going on a Bear Hunt is a current favorite. By fall he is going to be very different from where he was last fall, really just a baby. Now he is going to be one of the kids, probably wanting to "do school" too, whether he asks with words or with destructive tendencies :)
We'll also do swimming lessons, Vacation Bible School, and lots and lots of baseball!
July-early August will be summer break from all textbooks!
