Week in Review 11/17-11/21

A few things that went on this week:

The boys have a new interest: robots!

Reagan and Avery are interested in making robots. To begin we got out a few robotic toys they got as Christmas presents last year. Reagan put together a detector robot and made an obstacle course. Later he built a light sensitive "alarm clock" robot.

Avery (who is never content to just follow the directions on a kit) wanted to put the circuit board from the detector robot into the body of his scorpion robot. I let him take apart both robots and examine the parts and the wires. He made a plan for which wire on the detector circuit board to connect to which part of the scorpion robot (battery, switch, or motor). He was ready to make the actual connections when he realized the circuit board was too big to fit inside the plastic body of the scorpion so decided not to go through with the transplant. I was impressed with the scope of his idea and how much progress he was able to make to carry it out. We've been reading two books about robots that we found at the library after Avery insisted we go to the library and look for books about robots:

Robots From Everyday to Out of This World which gives an overview of different types of robots and their uses.

and

How to Build Your Own Prize Winning Robot which as the title implies gives instructions for building your own programmable robot. The boys are soaking up the technical details more than I imagined they would, I am hoping we can obtain some robot making supplies.

Reagan has also continued his interest with presidents. He made berry flummery, John Adam's favorite dessert. We enjoyed eating the results while we read John Adam's biography from the book Have Fun With the Presidents.

This somehow led to a discussion of desserts in colonial times, and if they celebrated Halloween the way we do now with candy and costumes.

We have begun reading the Brown Paper School Book of the American Revolution as an extension of our presidents study. This has been a hit so far, with both Reagan and Avery.

Mary and Jameson learned about circles. They made art using toilet paper tubes dipped in paint to stamp circles on their paper and embellished their paintings with circle stickers. While they worked I read The Circle Dogs, a cute picture book about dogs who curl up in circles.

I love how their paintings turned out! Here is Mary's:
